In a press release issued earlier this week, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) announced that the Stop African Swine Fever campaign is continuing for a third consecutive year. The program is being conducted in partnership with local authorities in eighteen European countries.

"The spread of African swine fever continues at an alarming rate, with a recent outbreak in Italy and two sporadic outbreaks in Germany, near the borders of France and the Netherlands respectively," said EFSA Executive Director Bernhard Url. "African swine fever is not limited to wild boars in Eastern and Central Europe. It is a global problem that poses a significant threat to pigs, farmers and the pork industry, and needs to be addressed together by all."

"Empowering stakeholders and economic actors with information is paramount to stopping the spread of African swine fever on the continent," added DG SANTE food crisis preparedness director Bernard Van Goethem. "Thanks to decisive action on the ground as well as constant information campaigns, the EU has succeeded in eradicating ASF in several countries in recent years, particularly in the Czech Republic and Belgium. However, we must not let our guard down as new outbreaks are regularly reported."

The campaign will target farmers, veterinarians and hunters. Facilitated by local farmers' groups, veterinary organizations, hunting associations and other relevant bodies, the campaign aims to raise awareness on how to prevent the spread of ASF.

The initiative is part of an ongoing effort by EFSA, the European Commission and other international organizations to halt the spread of ASF in the EU and neighboring countries.
