Summarizing the results of the year 2009, it should be noted that total number of pigs in Ukraine increased up to 10.8% in 2009 compared to 2008.
Meanwhile, the total number of pigs decreased up to 11.4% at the end of 2008 compared to similar figures of 2007.

Pork import to the territory of Ukraine decreased more than in 20% as a result of livestock population growth. According to the results of the year, an average price for chilled pork sides made up 14.40 hrn/kg. Thereby a stable tendency was observed aimed at average monthly delivery price lowering, from 15.36 hrn/kg in January to 11.39 hrn/kg in December.

An essential price spread depending on original country draws attention. Thus, Polish and Dutch pork was delivered at the price of 8.50 hrn/kg, while German pork cost up to 18 hrn/kg. In geography of Ukrainian chilled pork import such tendencies are settled as: the biggest part of import belonged to Poland and Germany (40% and 30% accordingly), an identical  part of the market was occupied by Belgian and Dutch pork (15% and 12% accordingly), 2% was in possession of Hungary, and 1% of production belonged to other countries.

There is another fact to be mentioned separately: 400 tons of Chinese frozen pork in the amount of 5 mln hrn were imported to Ukraine for the first time in December. This activity came with the help of Hungarian supply company. An average frozen pork sides price set for the import to Ukraine was 12.45 hrn/kg in December last year, while trimming supply was fulfilled within the range of 6.50-8.50 hrn/kg.

Speaking about frozen pork it should be noted that positions of importing countries spread in a different way in 2009: an implicit leader, Brazil – 62% of frozen pork imported to Ukraine; the USA and Poland – 10%; Canada – 7%; Germany – 7%; other countries – 5%.

Meanwhile, 25 January est. purchase pork price is 15 hrn/kg of live weight. Verkhovna Rada adopted the act of Ukraine ‘As to amendments to some acts of Ukraine concerning agricultural sector support in terms of global financial crisis’ №1782-17 dated 22.12.2009, according to which milk and meat producers do not get processers’ VAT any more. Thus milk and meat prices might grow to 5-10% within the nearest month.
