The Spanish Ministry of Transport has launched a pilot project for the transportation of grain by rail from Ukraine to Spain as an alternative or addition to the sea route. This is reported on the website of the Spanish Ministry.

Railway operator Renfe Mercancías has already sent 25 40-foot containers to the Ukrainian border in Poland to transport 600 tons of Ukrainian corn to Spain.

"This is a pilot transportation, through which the ministry will see the technical and economic feasibility of rail transportation of grain from the Polish city of Lodz to Barcelona," the ministry explains.

Transportation from Ukraine to Spain is planned with the transshipment of grain in the city of Helm, 25 km from the Ukrainian border.

The Spanish train will arrive in Chelm at the end of August. There the grain will be reloaded into Renfe Mercancías containers for further transportation to the terminal of the logistics operator Kombiverker in Lodz. Transportation between Lodz and Chelm is carried out by Polish rail operator DBP.

After loading the containers, the train will return to the terminal in Barcelona in early September, from where the grain will be delivered to the final buyer.
