In spite of Ukraine associated with bacon all over the world, the output of this product has decreased in resent years.
Moreover, bacon import volume increases each year. Thus, last year Ukraine imported nearly 40% of bacon more than in 2008. Strategic product supply volume from abroad increased from 34,000 tons in 2008 to 47,300 in 2009.
This imbalance on the market is caused by changes in home pig producers priorities that move on to meat and bacon pigs breeding. Bacon is 30-50% cheaper, that’s why it’s less profitable for agricultural enterprises. However, this product is as widely used for sausage manufacture as before which stimulates import growth. Consequently, ‘Комментарии’ writes, ‘The niche left available by Ukrainian producers who gave up on bacon pigs breeding is being gradually occupied by Poles, because Poland considers Ukraine to be a perspective bacon market outlet.
