Ukrainian meat import was 58 thousand tons in the first quarter of 2010, and it is 40% lower than in the same period last year.

The UKAB experts note that the decrease of import is caused by the development of domestic livestock, strengthening of veterinary control, and Ukrainian consumers lower solvency as well. At the same time the bulk of poultry meat (24 tons) and pork(19 tons) import is still the main import share.

It is noted that an import decrease may be a trend of the whole the year of 2010, as at the beginning of April the number of pigs in Ukraine increased by 14% compared to the same period last year, poultry - by more than t5%, and the implementation of the meat for slaughter exceeded figures of last year to 8%.

"In coarse of  time, not only competition in imports will be noticeable, but also the competition of domestic producers will be", - said Vladimir Lapa, expert of the ASTP.
