Five pig farms from areas close to the war zone or under occupation are receiving veterinary advisory support to improve the health status of their herds.

For enterprises that were directly affected by the war (suffered destruction, survived the occupation for some time, and were forced to reduce their livestock), the Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders (AUPB) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) provided advisory support from veterinary medicine specialists as part of the second phase of the Animal Health in Ukraine project. Leading veterinary experts in Ukraine were involved in its implementation.

The ultimate goal of the project is to improve herd health and production performance to a level where the enterprise can receive an additional 1.5-2 piglets per sow per year, which is equivalent to an additional production of 8.5 thousand tonnes of pork per year on the scale of these farms.

The programme includes regular visits to the farms. The first of them have already taken place. They took place in the format of a veterinary audit, which helped identify the main issues that need to be addressed and formulate an action plan to achieve the goals set.

The Association of Ukrainian Pig Breeders is a non-profit, voluntary organization founded by domestic pork producers. The main goals of the association are to represent and protect the rights and interests of the association's farms, promote the development and implementation of new technologies for efficient pork production, expand sales markets, and protect the domestic market.
